Scientific research begins with a defined research question, leading to well-designed research methodology and a set of results from which a manuscript can be constructed. The purpose of this course is to provide doctoral students with essential skills for writing up an academic paper for publication. The course will cover guidelines for writing a research paper for publication. Manuscripts submitted to journals for consideration for publication typically include the following components: title page, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, conclusions, acknowledgements, references, tables, table captions, figure, and figure legends. Principles and essential contents for constructing each component of a typical research paper will be addressed in this course. Standards for reporting clinical trials and observation studies will be addressed. Ethical and legal issues in academic writing will be discussed in this course. Steps for submitting a manuscript for publication will also be introduced.
